The stupid, it burns

Rais Yatim on passive-aggressive victim blaming:

In a move to stop Malaysian women being duped into carrying drugs for international syndicates, the Foreign Ministry has proposed that all women travelling out of the country alone be required to have a letter from parents or employers.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the letter would be a declaration which stated clearly the reason the woman was travelling.

He said his ministry and the Home Ministry feel the move is necessary and a proposal for this has been submitted to the Cabinet. The move drew immediate flak from several quarters, including non-governmental organisations, women’s organisations and politicians.

Even accounting for all the stupidity we've heard from the Government the last couple of months, this might actually be worse. A foreign minister, one of the elite in Malaysian politics, one you could say is Malaysia's representative to the rest of the world... and making women bring a note from their parents wherever they go is the best idea he can come up with? Fuck me, that's a big stinky pile of stupid.

When I said "stop the infighting and get on with the governing", this isn't quite what I had in mind.

So, congratulations, Badawi: your Cabinet's not only mired in post-election blues and an uncertain future, but your handpicked minister has come up with a plan that no one in their right mind could support.
